Munro College's Javontae Smith smashes shot put record

ST JAMES, Jamaica - Munro College's Javontae Smith smashed the Class 2 boys' shot put record on Thursday's first day of the County of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA)/GraceKennedy Western Champs held at Cornwall College with a 18.21m effort.

Smith, who set the Class 3 record last year, broke the one-year-old Class 2 record 15.80m set last year by Petersfield High's Ranaldo Anderson by over two metres.

The effort was just short of his personal best 18.45m set a week ago at the Milo Western Relays at GC Foster Sports College, the longest shot put in the world this year by a male under 18 years old.

All five of his legal throws were over 17.00m as he broke the record on his first attempt which was 17.50m, then improved to 17.77 in the second round before his massive heave.

He then threw 17.88m and then 17.02m before fouling on his final effort.

Munro College leads the men's points table with 116 points after 16 of the 31 finals set for Thursday were scored, followed by Cornwall College- 101, defending champions St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS)- 93, William Knibb Memorial- 89.5 and Herbert Morrison Technical- 39, rounding out the top five.

Defending champions STETHS lead the women's section with 108 points, followed by Mt Alvernia High-67 points, Petersfield High-48, William Knibb Memorial-43 and Black River High-30.

Romario Hines of Munro College won the Class 1 boys' 200m, running a personal best 20.92 seconds (1.7m/s), beating Cornwall College's Zachary Cox- 21.21 seconds with Muschett High's Osmond Holt taking third in 21.35 seconds, both also lifetime best marks.

Johan-Ramaldo Smythe of Muschett High won the Class 2 200m with a wind-aided 20.97 seconds (2.9m/s), ahead of Jabari Matheson of William Knibb-21.36 seconds and Thomas Daley of Cornwall College-21.62 seconds.

The boys' class 3 200m gold medal went to Jamanie Hylton of St Elizabeth Technical in a wind-aided 22.82 seconds (4.6m /s), followed by Eljay Smith of William Knibb Memorial- 22.94 seconds and Anthony Drummond of Cornwall College-23.18 seconds.

Shanque Williams of STETHS won the Class 1 girls' 200m gold with a wind-aided 24.07 seconds (2.4m/s), Fadine Abbott of Petersfield High was second with 24.69 seconds with Mt Alvernia's Rhianna Rerrie third with 25.08 seconds.

Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia High retained her Class 2 girls' 200m title, running a wind-aided 22.92 seconds (3.0m/s), beating Shanoya Douglas of Muschett High-23.31 seconds and Rihana Allen of STETHS- 24.99 seconds.

William Knibb Memorial's Daniellia Dixon won the Class 3 girls' 200m with a wind-aided 24.84 seconds (2.9m/s), just edging Mareka Williams of STETHS - 24.85 with Mt Alvernia High's Giana Murray third with 25.11 seconds.

Veneisha Pottinger of Mt Alvernia won the Class 4 200m with 25.07 seconds (1.7m/s) beating Kerian Jarrett of Maggotty High- 25.73 seconds and Zwange Edwards of Mt Alvernia High third with 25.87 seconds.

Nathaniel Wallace of William Knibb Memorial retained his Class 1 1500m title running 4:16.81 seconds, comfortably ahead of Charehon Chonally of Maggotty High- 4:22.51 seconds and Joaqueem Miller of STETHS- 4:23.46 seconds.

Chloe Palmer of STETHS took the Class 1 girls,' long jump with a personal best 6.08m, beating her teammate Richelle Stanley- 5.94m and William Knibb's Cheyenne Cooper- 5.36m.

Devonte Edwards of Munro College won the Class 1 boys' shot put with a personal best 17.60m, STETHS' Raeton Rogers also threw a personal best 16.62m for second while favourite Mar-Lando Farquharson of Cornwall College finished third with 16.54m

Junior Wright won the Class 3 boys' discus throw with 54.35m, almost 10m ahead of Munro College's Brandon Lawrence's 45.45m with Javier Dunkley of Black River High third with 36.26m.

Petersfield High's Marsha McKoy won the girls' class 1 shot put with 12.54m, ahead of William Knibb's Dejaunae Wallace's 11.92m and Deandre Clarke of Petersfield was third with 9.73m.
