JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng legislature's portfolio committee on community safety has commended the provincial government for finding innovative ways to combat crime in the province.

Recently, the provincial government signed a memorandum with security company Vumacam to install CCTV cameras in crime hotspots across Gauteng.

These cameras are expected to be installed in townships, schools, and other public spaces.

The community safety committee said the installation of more cameras in the province would help detect criminal activities and respond to them before any real damage is done.

It said this would also help keep schools safe for both pupils and teachers in the future.

Earlier in February, a Grade 8 pupil was stabbed to death outside the gates of the Oakdale secondary school in Ennerdale.

The committee said this tragedy might have been prevented if there had been cameras outside the school to detect the commotion.

It also committed to monitoring the installation of these CCTV cameras across the province to address the escalating crime levels.
