Call to upgrade Sipitang bridge

SIPITANG: Residents here want the government to assist in upgrading the suspension bridge which links people to the Borneo Pa'sia eco farm.
Pengiran Salutan, a villager, said the bridge has attracted both local and foreign visitors to the district.

He said that the eco farm was created as a tourism destination and that in addition to an organic paddy field, there are buffaloes and goats, recreational ponds, bio-parks, and trails for tourists to jungle trek and farmers to find food.
"Many visitors are excited by the uniqueness and natural beauty of the bridge and some even asked for the bridge to be upgraded for the safety and comfort of users," he said.

Read more He said the bridge was initially built following two occurrences in which a former village head and a soldier were swept away while attempting to cross the river.
He added that two agriculture officials were soaked while attempting to cross the river during a work visit a few years back.

He said that his sense of responsibility for the safety of those crossing the river prompted him to construct the bamboo bridge.
"Realising the danger, I decided to build the bridge for people to cross the river safely and to prevent untoward incidents from recurring," he said.
