CAPE TOWN - The Eastern Cape Department of Transport is calling for motorists to drive responsibly following the deaths of seven people in two separate accidents involving minibus taxis at the weekend.

In East London, the driver of a Toyota Quantum carrying 18 passengers lost control of the vehicle on Saturday, leaving five people dead on the N2 highway.

According to the department, survivors including the driver are in critical condition in hospital.

Spokesperson Unathi Binqose said another accident involving a taxi took place in Mthatha.

"A mini-bus taxi collided with a bakkie and two people died in that accident, and we are calling on road users to be extra vigilant at all times and and help us avoid avoidable incidents like the ones we have witnessed," said Binqose.
