GEORGE TOWN: The state is awaiting the results of the tests on the rare earth elements (REE) found in Penang which are said to be worth an estimated RM100bil, says Chow Kon Yeow (pic).
The Chief Minister said that the state was waiting for the relevant agencies involved, which are carrying out the exploration, to present their findings.
"We are waiting for the results as well. If there is a sufficient quantity of the REE and it is viable for them to explore it.
"We have to wait until the results come out.
"The agencies involved are currently exploring it and will then present their findings," he said during a press conference held at Chowrasta Market after Chow handed out flowers in conjunction with International Women's Day on Friday (March 8).
When asked how long it would take before the findings are presented, Chow said he hoped soon.
"Hopefully it is as soon as possible," he said.
In November 2023, Chow revealed that there were REE in the state.
He said during a Penang state assembly sitting that based on sampling studies conducted at various locations such as Teluk Bahang, Balik Pulau and around Nibong Tebal by the Minerals and Geoscience Department (JMG), it has been found that Penang has natural resources estimated to be worth RM100bil.
He said then that the State Secretary's Office was arranging a meeting with the department for advice on what to do next.
