CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has stepped up efforts to fight illegal dumping after law enforcement issued 8,000 fines between July and December 2023.
According to the city, the combined number of fines was from the traffic service, law enforcement, and metro police departments.
Safety and Security Portfolio Committee Chairperson Mzwakhe Nqavashe said 68 vehicles used for illegal dumping were also impounded during the same period.
Nqavashe said illegal dumping continued to pose serious challenges in many neighbourhoods in the Mother City.
"Illegal dumping is a serious offence, but also a selfish act, because it shows a complete disregard for the rights, health, and wellbeing of others and future generations.
"The portfolio committee notes the dedication of our enforcement services in tackling this scourge, which is but one of the many challenges in our city."
Nqavashe also urged residents to blow the whistle on illegal dumping.
"This, like many other enforcement priorities, is a shared responsibility. So, if you see something, say something."
