TAWAU: The State Government is poised to provide Rumah Mesra Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) to former veterans of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), offering them the chance to own homes in the near future.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, said committee members of the Veterans Association of the Malaysian Armed Forces (PVATM) must submit official applications.

He said the initiative aims to fulfil the housing needs of deserving veterans, recognising their invaluable service to the nation.

If these veterans meet the prescribed conditions, the State government will not face any problem in granting approval for the construction of SMJ houses for them.

"Each State legislative assembly throughout the State is allocated 20 Rumah Mesra SMJ. This is a good opportunity for ATM veteran members to enjoy this facility in the future," he said.

Meanwhile, while speaking at the inauguration of the annual general meeting of PVATM Tawau branch, Nizam, who is Apas Assemblyman, commended the government's concern.

He said the allocation of RM244 million through the Department of Veterans Affairs of the Malaysian Armed Forces (Jhev ATM) by the Ministry of Defence, highlighting its commendable nature.

"This is for the preparation of the Welfare Assistance Scheme (SBK) for ATM veterans this year.

The financial assistance is a continuation of the ATM for veterans, aimed at easing the burden on their livelihood.

"This allocation includes the provision for welfare, covering aspects of health, education and housing, including Living Allowance (BSH) throughout this year," said Nizam.

He said the allocation of BSH tripled this year to RM174 million, compared to RM54 million last year, which is proof that the government recognises the contribution of former ATM personnel.
