4G dominates Kenya's mobile data usage

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 14 - The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has highlighted that the 4G mobile network is leading with 51.5 percent of total mobile data subscriptions in the country.
CA attributes this to the increasing popularity of fast internet connectivity among consumers.
The network is also currently contributing to 97 percent of network coverage in the country and further contributing to 87.7 percent of total data volumes consumed as of December 2023.
"4G technology has gained popularity among consumers of mobile data services, contributing up to 51.5 percent of total mobile data subscriptions," CA says in its latest data.
"In addition, mobile data volumes consumed within the 4G network accounted for 82.7 percent of total data volumes," it added.
"4G mobile network coverage in the country is currently at 97 percent, with 2G and 3G leading at 98 percent."
Furthermore, the CA report shows that the number of mobile phones in Kenya as of December 2023 stood at 65.45 million, which translated to a penetration rate of 129.4 percent.
Similarly, the recorded number of smartphones in the country stood at 33.6 million, translating to a penetration rate of 66.4 percent, while that of feature phones stood at 31.84 million, which translates to a penetration rate of 62.9 percent.
