CAPE TOWN - The Cape Flats Safety Forum has called on the government to adopt a new approach to fighting gang violence on Human Rights Day.

This follows a recent spike in shootings and gang-related crime in many communities, including Mitchells Plain, Bishop Lavis and others.

During the week, the South African Police Service (SAPS) bolstered its units operating in various areas in the Cape Flats in a bid to stop the violence.

The Cape Flats Safety Forum welcomed the extra boots on the ground, but said a new approach was needed.

"We are saying to the agencies they also need to have a multi-faceted approach to include community organisations and members of the community that have like-minded thinking to ensure that we have safer Cape Flats," said Cape Flats Safety Forum chairperson Abie Isaacs.
