MONTEGO BAY, St James -- Granville United are the champions of the St James Football Association/Sandals Major League title after beating Flanker United 4-3 on penalty kicks, having played to a 1-1 result in the final at Jarrett Park on Friday.
Granville United have won the title for the first time in more than a decade. They have qualified for the play-offs of the Jamaica Football Federation Championships, set to be contested later this year. Flanker United have now lost back-to-back finals.
Ajani Clarke scored in the 24th minute to give Granville United the lead before Everado Chambers equalised for Flanker United in the 73rd minute. After extra time the teams failed to break the deadlock which led to the encounter being decided by penalty shoot-out.
After upsetting two-time champions Reggae Youths in the semi-finals, Granville United would have started the final as favourites and obliged with a win.
In the other semi-final, Flanker had beaten Lilliput Rovers on penalty kicks after the game ended 2-2 on aggregate.
Granville had finished second to Flanker in Zone A in the first round. Neither team had managed to beat the other, playing out 0-0 and 2-2 results.
