JOHANNESBURG - The uMkhonto weSizwe political formation (MK Party) is worried about the safety of its leader Jacob Zuma after he escaped unscathed in a dramatic car accident.

Police reports say that on Thursday night, an alleged drunk driver hit a state-armoured vehicle that was transporting the former president.

The collision happened on a road in Eshowe, north of Kwazulu-Natal, while Zuma was heading to his Nkandla homestead.

Like all former State presidents, Zuma still enjoys security from the Presidential Protection Services albeit with a smaller contingent of bodyguards and cars.

Photos of the accident show the State vehicle badly damaged on the driver's side.

While Zuma was whisked away to safety, MK Party's head of elections Musa Mkhize said he suspected foul play around the accident.

"We call upon the minister of police, the national commander of police and the general who is in charge of the unit to make sure that they go deeper and solve this problem on the attack of our president."

A 51-year-old man is expected to appear at the Eshowe Magistrates Court on Tuesday, facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol as well as reckless and negligent driving.
