JOHANNESBURG - The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) political party said it will appeal the Electoral Commission of South Africa's (IEC) decision to remove Jacob Zuma from its candidates list.

Last week, the IEC upheld an objection to Zuma's candidature, meaning he was disqualified from standing for legislative seats in the upcoming general elections.

Tuesday is the final day for Zuma and the party to appeal the decision at the Electoral Court.

The IEC said a candidate can be disqualified if they have been sentenced to more than 12 months in prison without the option of a fine.

In 2021, Zuma was sentenced to a 15-month prison term after being found guilty of contempt of court.

MK Party's head of elections, Musa Mkhize, said their lawyers were still finalising their grounds for appeal.

"There is nothing that is going to stop President Zuma, as far as we stand in all aspects, but of course, what we need to do is follow what is prescribed by the Electoral Court."

If the appeal is lodged, the Electoral Court has until 9 April to make a ruling.
