Couple claims trial to charge of abusing five-year-old boy

SEREMBAN: A couple claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of abusing a five-year-old boy.

The victim's mother and his stepfather claimed trial after the charge was read to them before judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi.

They allegedly committed the offence at a house in Mantin between April 2022 and March 23 this year.

Both accused had allegedly used a cane and clothes hanger to cause injury to the victim.

They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 which carries a jail term of up to 20 years or a fine of up to RM50,000 or both upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Syamimi Farhana Muhammad A.Aziz then offered each of the accused a bail of RM20,000 pending remention.

The duo were unrepresented.

Meor Sulaiman then allowed the duo to be released on a bail of RM5,000 with one surety each and fixed May 17 for remention.
