Donegal Coroner and Stranorlar GP Dr. Denis McCauley will be appointed as the new President of the Irish Medical Organisation today.

The IMO AGM takes place in Killarney this week.

Dr. Denis McCauley is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin in 1985. He completed his General Practice training in Donegal before commencing work in Millbrae Surgery in 1990. He has a special interest in Internal Medicine.

The IMO's gathering will also highlight the 'unsustainable' working environment for junior doctors.

A survey has found that the health and safety of both patients and doctors in Irish hospitals is being routinely put at risk because young doctors are forced to work unsafe and illegal working hours.

The survey found that 83% of non-consultant hospital doctors are "routinely" working unsafe and illegal working hours in contravention of the Organisation of Working Time Act. 77% of NCHDs report being pressured by their employer to work extra shifts - often at short notice - to cover gaps in rotas.

Almost 100% of NCHDs cite excessive hours, poor supports and challenging working conditions as the key driver for doctor emigration.
