JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) says it's aware of claims that its Parliamentary chief whip Pemmy Majodina is behind the political downfall of former speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

The 67-year-old made her first court appearance this week for allegedly receiving bribes from a military contractor during her time as Defence Minister.

An aggrieved Mapisa-Nqakula took the matter to the party's structures.

In her affidavit in court, Mapisa-Nqakula made claims that Majodina was among those pushing for her highly-anticipated arrest, triggering a process that could see her fall from grace.

ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member Obed Bapela said the allegations were being dealt with internally.

"If indeed it's true, the officials - the NWC [National Working Committee] are at liberty to engage on that particular issue but otherwise, if there is a member who is aggrieved by a particular situation, we cannot ignore their grief and we therefore will definitely attend to that matter as the ANC and at the right time, the ANC will then respond to that particular issue."
