CAPE TOWN - Western Cape residents are bracing for inclement weather conditions to continue for a second day.

Videos and pictures are being shared widely on social media showing the destruction gale force winds and heavy rainfall have caused in communities across the province since Sunday.

Trees have been uprooted and roofs of structures, including houses and schools, have blown off.

Schools in the Cape Winelands and Overberg education districts, as well as the Helderberg basin area, will be closed on Monday.

Education MEC David Maynier said that schools were informed about this decision on Sunday.

"The closure will be in effect only for Monday, 8 April 2024, at this stage. Our default position is always to keep schools open but we are mindful of the severity of the warnings in place, including a level 9 warning for the Overberg and southern Cape Winelands. We have not taken the decision to close these schools lightly."
