NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 10 -- Detectives in Nairobi have recovered a firearm that was violently snatched from a senior police officer by an armed criminal gang in Vihiga in December 2023.
The Jericho pistol, which belonged to the Officer Commanding Vihiga Police Station, was recovered on Wednesday in Mwiki, within Nairobi's Kasarani sub-county.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced that one member of the gang was neutralized following a confrontation with the DCI Operations team that was tracking down the robbers.
"To get the firearm, the ruthless gang had on the said date waylaid the Chief Inspector as he parked his car in Vihiga's Majengo market, descending on him with daggers and leaving him for the dead," the DCI said.
The Jericho pistol was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition when the robbers seized it from the OCS.
After conducting surveillance for several days, detectives from the DCI Operations Directorate responded to a tip-off from an anonymous caller who reported seeing a suspicious vehicle occupied by three armed men at the KU farm in Mwiki.
The agency said the detectives established suspects at the scene matched the description of a gang that had evaded several police dragnets after being linked to several attacks in Nairobi.
DCI agents impounded a Nissan Note alongside other exhibits.
