Buru Buru traffic officer filmed collecting bribes from PSVs recalled

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 12 - A traffic police officer who was captured on camera allegedly collecting bribes from Public Service Vehicles within Nairobi's Buru Buru area has been suspended, police headquarters has said.
The National Police Service said Friday that it had began disciplinary proceedings for his dismissal from the Service.
The move comes after a viral video emerged online showing the officer appearing to receive what is believed to be bribes from several vehicles plying the route.
"The Officer, attached to Traffic within Buruburu Police Station has been suspended from Traffic Police Unit with immediate effect, and proceedings for his dismissal are ongoing," NPS said Friday.
The NPS commended the members of public and media for their continued collaboration with security agencies in the campaign to combat graft.
The NPS assured Kenyans of its commitment to its constitutional mandate of fighting corruption and striving for the highest standards of professionalism and discipline among its members.
The incident comes two days after the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) agents trough its Central Regional Office in Nyeri, arrested, a DCI Officer based at Ngano Police Station, Nyandaraua County, for demanding Sh10,000 bribe from a local resident who had lost Sh115,000 in Mpesa to fraudsters, and needed police assistance to recover the funds.
The anti-graft agency said that the suspect told the complainant that the bribe was mandatory to facilitate tracking of the fraudsters.
