Despite a revamped programme which has lent itself to almost as much dead air as it has action, day two of ASA's (Athletics South Africa) National Senior Track and Field Championships finally found the burn bit to go with the slow burn nature of the scheduling of the nationals on Friday.

Thanks to the men and women's 100m finals, a women's 400m hurdles final so surprisingly competitive it yielded two Olympic qualifying times, the welcome sight of Wayde van Niekerk gracing a local track again, a qualifying standard near-miss in the men's long jump and a men's high jump final laced with just the right amount of beef, the national champs came to a nice boil at an Umsunduzi Athletics Track which was boiling itself (the temperatures were in the early 30s).
