CAPE TOWN - A fire at Skeleton Gorge in the Table Mountain National Park has largely been contained.

Officials from the park said the light rain and mist over the past few days had helped contain the fire's spread.

South African National Parks (SANParks) communications head, JP Louw, said teams were still on the scene to monitor hotspots.

"Light rain and mist over the past few days have contained the fire spread on the big Table, but isolated hotspots, smouldering stumps, as well as falling trees and rockfalls remain a concern."

The fire started by a lightning strike on Sunday and burned approximately 283 hectares of veld.

Hiking trails along Constantia Nek and Newlands, as well as trails along the back table between Camps Bay, Hout Bay, and Orangekloof, have been reopened.

However, Skeleton Gorge and the contour path between Fernwood and Cecilia Forest remain closed.
