MANILA - The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported Thursday that the number of cybercrime complaints from Jan. 1 to May 9 has dropped by almost 30 percent.

Citing its latest data, the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group logged a total of 6,151 complaints over the period, compared to 8,775 in the same period in 2023.

Online selling scams, investment scams, and phishing scams were the top prevalent cybercrime complaints with 1,365, 473, and 426 complaints, respectively.

ACG Director, Brig. Gen. Ronnie Francis Cariaga, said this development shows progress in addressing digital threats and cybersecurity measures implemented by businesses and government agencies.

"It underscores the importance of sustained collaboration, cooperation, and vigilance across all sectors of society to effectively mitigate cyber risks and safeguard the integrity of the digital environment," Cariaga said.

Aside from cybercrimes, the ACG is also intensifying cyber patrols to crack down on videos on social media that were manipulated using deepfake technology, which has also victimized President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
