Get Your Priorities Right, FCOSS Tells Government

Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) executive director Vani Catanasiga believes that discussions and reviews on parliamentary emoluments should not be the Government's priority right now.

Ms Catanasiga said Government needed to get their priorities right.

"It is obvious and quite glaring that there are huge misalignments between the focus of our members of Parliament in the Special Emoluments Committee and that of the people of Fiji," Ms Catanasiga said.

"FCOSS wishes to re-emphasise to all our honorable members that those issues such as access to clean and safe drinking water, well equipped health facilities, access to education for rural children, fighting the drug epidemic and rooting out corruption, to name a few, should be the first priority for budget or funding," Ms Catanasiga said.

"Those should remain priority now and into the near future."

She said it was important for the MPs to remember why they were in Parliament and to take their oaths seriously.

"Our message to the Members of Parliament is to remember who they swore allegiance to, to serve and why. Some of them forget that so easily."
