ANC's Mbalula not bothered by AfriForum move to privately prosecute him over 2016 Dubai trip

JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, insists he's not fazed by AfriForum's decision to privately prosecute him over his 2016 Dubai trip scandal.

During his tenure as sports minister, Mbalula took his family on a trip to Dubai, which was allegedly funded by a supplier to the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

Last year, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) declined to prosecute the ANC secretary-general despite the Public Protector finding him guilty of contravening the executives act.

Earlier this week, AfriForum stated that Mbalula had a case to answer for his 2016 Dubai trip, which cost over R600,000.

The lobby group is now challenging the NPA's decision not to prosecute him, eight years after the controversial trip.

But Mbalula has questioned AfriForum's motives, saying he was vindicated by law enforcement agencies.

"We've got right in terms of the law. AfriForum must know that we are no scared of them. And if they stand for something good, let them stand for it but we've got rights."

Late last year, the NPA said it had found no evidence, insisting there was an act of criminality surrounding the trip.
