ROSHOLT, Wis. (WSAW) - "State" isn't just a street leading to Rosholt High school, "State" is also where you'll find Alex Wierzba. The sophomore Hornet will soon return for his second-consecutive trip to state track and field in La Crosse. It's quite the feat considering he's fairly new to the sport.

"I was always like one of the fastest kids in my grade, and I got convinced in 8th grade to do it," says Alex. "And I kinda liked it and I was having success.

Last year, Alex gave up a lifelong career of football to focus solely on track and field. He's since broken Rosholt's 100, 200, and 400 meter records, all accomplishments backed by sure-fire passion.

"When he finds something, he obsesses about it and just tries to improve at it," says T.J. Wierzba, Alex's older brother and Rosholt senior. "It's hard to find something that you're good at and enjoy and care about as much as he does."

"If I had another plane ticket, I'd take him to the Olympic Trials in June," says Rosholt Track and Field Varsity Head Coach Mike Trzebiatowski. "Cause he'd just eat that up and spit it out."

But it all starts with self-confidence.

"There's a lot of Alex's out there, but they might not know it because they don't figure it out, and that's the sad part," says Trzebiatowski. "Believe in what you can do off of what you practice, because that sets you up."

While passion, confidence, and fast wheels are part of Alex's success, family is his driving force.

"I really wanna make them proud, and they're always their for me," says Alex. "So whatever I can do to make them proud, it's what I want to do."
