Fijian Dr Nilendra (Nile) Krishna Nair has become the first local to graduate from Harvard University in the USA with a PhD in Planetary Health, Climate Change and Nutritional Epidemiology and a Master's Degree in Epidemiology.

His father and former deputy commissioner of Fiji police, Itendra Nair, said this was a proud moment for the family.

"From a young age, he has shown remarkable academic prowess and career success, always pushing the boundaries and setting new standards," Mr Nair said.

"Leaving home at a young age, he ventured into the world, living independently in foreign countries, and paving his own path with unwavering tenacity and resilience.

"His journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and his determination has brought him to this amazing milestone."

Mr Nair and his wife Sabita attended their son's graduation last week.

"His passion for healthcare and research, especially in the Pacific Islands, drives him to make a significant impact.

"He hopes that his achievement will inspire other underrepresented minorities and Pacific islanders to reach for the stars and aspire to prestigious institutions like Harvard."

Dr Nair will continue his work on the nexus of climate change, planetary and human health at Harvard as the first Fijian postdoctoral research fellow and instructor. || WEST- Fijian Harvard || Graduation
