GEORGE TOWN: The state is waiting for a full report from the Education Department on the teaching of Science and Mathematics in Bahasa Malaysia (BM) in 11 Chinese secondary schools.

Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid said the state government has taken into account the concerns raised by the school boards.

"We acknowledge the importance of a suitable language in learning and are working closely with the department to ensure the issue is resolved effectively," he said in a statement on Thursday (June 6).

He said in Penang, 50 secondary and 35 primary schools were involved in the dual language programme (DLP).

The issues were due to the implementation of a ruling that at least one Science and Mathematics class be taught in BM.

Dr Mohamad, who is the state education committee chairman, said a just solution will be found to ensure all students receive quality education for the good of future generations.

On Wednesday, the boards and Parent-Teacher Associations of 11 Chinese secondary schools said they strongly opposed the forceful implementation of at least one class using BM as the medium of instruction.

They said almost all parents in the schools were against the policy and reluctant to send their children to the class.
