Disaster Risk Management Centre coordinating responses to weather-related matters - COCT

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town said that its Disaster Risk Management Centre continues to coordinate responses and assessments of weather-related impacts.

It's received reports of flooding in a number of areas including Khayelitsha, Philippi, Gugulethu, Kraaifontein, Elsiesriver, Dunoon and Belgravia.

New Village in Nomzamo, Strand was the worst-affected area, with 180 structures flooded.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has been requested to provide humanitarian relief.

Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell: "The Roads Department is providing sand and milling, while Informal Settlement Management is making assessments in flooded areas and will provide flood kits. Many roadways across the city have been flooded and the Roads Department is clearing debris and unblocking drains. The Electricity Department is attending to weather-related power outages in several areas."
