As mop-up ops continue in WC after heavy rain, DWS delighted dam levels stable in province

CAPE TOWN - While mop-up operations continue following recent heavy downpours that have left several roads flooded in some parts of the Western Cape, the water department said it was delighted that dam levels in the province were stable.

The department said the combined average of Western Cape water supply was at 58.60% compared to 58.96% last week.

The Gouritz River catchment system, which includes the Central Karoo and the Little Karoo, is currently at 84.71%, a 0.24 percentage decline compared to 84.95% last week.

The department said this catchment had experienced remarkable recovery, compared to the previous years when its percentage was below 50%.

However, some parts of the province have been severely affected by the inclement weather, with the Overberg and the Garden Route districts worst-affected.

Disaster management officials said that a joint operation centre had been activated in George and was on high alert.

However, the Water and Sanitation Department said that at this stage, there had not been immediate reports of damaged water infrastructure which could lead to water supply challenges in the province.

It said that while the first few days of June had been greeted with significant downpours, this did not give confidence that winter, rainy days were upon us.
