Hawks officer set to be cross-examined in Nafiz Modack trial

CAPE TOWN - Hawks officer Captain Edward du Plessis is set to be cross-examined in the high-profile trial against alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack on Monday.

Modack, along with 14 others, faces 124 charges related to racketeering, murder, and other crimes, including the murder of top cop Charl Kinnear.

Captain Du Plessis last week presented evidence of how Modack and co-accused Zane Killian gained access to Kinnear's and criminal defence attorney William Booth's personal details.

The trial centres around the murder of Kinnear, who was shot dead in front of his Bishop Lavis home in September 2020, and the attempted murder of Booth outside his Higgovale home in April 2020.

It is the State's case that Modack hired Killian to trace Kinnear and Booth and gain access to their personal information by using a computer platform designed for police.

Du Plessis also produced evidence that Modack tried to bribe top cop Jeremy Vearey and Kinnear after being approached by a middleman.

The trial continues in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.
