LEEDS - The Leeds Board of Education heard a proposal to make several changes to its code of conduct during a brief meeting on Tuesday, June 11.
Jason Baker, Director of Secondary Education and Testing explained that the first change was to add verbiage to the code of conduct regarding the Alabama Literacy Act where third grade students are promoted if they meet sufficient reading skills and/or qualify for a good cause exemption.
The second was to revise the medication procedure for the local schools dealing with prescription medication, over the counter medication, and supplies in clinics
The third change was to exam exemptions for attendance in grades six through 12 students only. This is for students who can receive an exemption for second and fourth nine weeks exams if they qualify with a certain final grade and attendance requirement
Fourthly were additional guidelines for Class 3 disciplinary procedures in regard to the Teachers Bill of Rights" or student discipline act passed by the Alabama legislature in May. However,
"We think the law is a little bit vague on that last one," Baker said.
Superintendent John Moore will attend a conference next week to get clarification and see about possible additions to the code before it is finally approved. Once set, the code will be available to read online.
In his comments Moore proposed that the board consider hiring a certified teacher who could promote the school district and act as a liaison for families. He added that he would like to hire someone to help with some of the attendance issues caused by the COVID pandemic in recent years.
"Someone who can be a connector piece between the school and the home," Moore described.
