SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco Mayor London Breed's plan to bring giant pandas to the city's zoo cleared another hurdle Tuesday. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors vote 9-2 to approve a resolution authorizing the city to solicit private donations to host the pandas from China.

That resolution passed a city committee last week. Tuesday's vote passed despite pushback from critics who say that mismanagement, animal welfare concerns and public safety issues that have plagued San Francisco Zoo for years make it an inhospitable place for pandas.
They also argue that the cost of the pandas will exceed the $25 million Breed is seeking from private donors.
The meeting got underway around 2 p.m. with the panda vote expected to take place sometime this on Tuesday evening.
