Basketball Fiji (BF) is rejoicing the incredible triumph of our men's and women's basketball teams at the recent Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.

The outstanding victories of both the men's and women's 5×5 basketball teams have brought great pride to the country and marked a pivotal moment in the growth and advancement of basketball in Fiji.

This is according to coach Laisiasa Puamau, who expressed his admiration for the men's 5×5 team, stating their historic Gold win after 16 years is a testament to their unwavering dedication and passion for the sport.

This victory also saw the dethroning of Guam, solidifying Fiji's status as the Pacific champion.

The women's 5×5 team's commendable performance secured the Bronze, further showcasing their skill on the court.

This achievement also serves as a reminder of the women's team's illustrious history, having previously secured gold in 1983, 1987, 2007, and 2015.

"The men's team's triumph has opened up exciting opportunities, qualifying them to participate in the upcoming Asian Cup next year. This will provide a platform for Fiji to showcase its basketball talent on a global scale," said Puamau.

Coach Puamau also acknowledged and celebrated the accomplishments of Fiji's esteemed ambassadors in basketball, such as the Whippy sisters, Valerie Nainima, and Joshua Fox.

Their dedication and achievements serve as an inspiration for the next generation of basketball players.

"We are setting up a new course, with the goal of not only establishing basketball as a major sport, but also creating pathways that extend beyond the courts," he added.

The organisation aims to use basketball as a tool for transforming the lives of youth, instilling valuable skills, discipline, and values that reach far beyond the game itself.
